So you say you’re ready to stain your deck?

If you’re looking out the window at a sad-looking deck that could use a little TLC, you’re not alone. Many homeowners dread the thought of restaining their deck because it seems like such a daunting task.

At Northumberland Co-op, we are here to remind you that staining a deck isn’t actually that difficult or time-consuming. In five easy steps, your deck will look refreshed and ready for good times with friends and family.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Take a close look at your deck. How long has it been since the boards have been treated to paint, stain, or waterproofer? Are there flaky or peeling patches? Is the surface dirty or plagued by mildew? Try splashing a bit of water on the boards to see if the wood soaks up the water or if it beads on the surface. If the deck absorbs the water quickly, come in to see us.
  2. Put it to the test. Walk carefully along the full length of your deck and gently bounce up and down to test the strength of the boards. Are there any loose or damaged boards that need to be replaced?
  3. Do the math. There’s no sense in coming in to buy stain, paint, or seal without having a clear idea of the size of your deck. Measure the length and width of your deck and multiply the numbers to figure out the square footage. Don’t forget to jot down any extra sections that will need coverage, like railings, gates, stairs, lattices, or built-in benches.
  4. Make a plan. Head to TIMBER MART with your measurements and an idea of the look you’d like to achieve or chat with us about different ideas. Do you like the rich look of dark stain or the long-lasting good looks of a lighter stain? Do you like to waterproof and let the wood’s natural beauty shine through or do you want to try something adventurous like staining the boards a variety of shades? Once you’ve made your selection, we’ll help you pick out the products and tools you need for the job.
  5. Hit the deck(s). Once your deck is clean and prepped, it’s time to read the instructions on your product and apply the stain. You can use a roller, brush, or pad — whatever feels most comfortable. It doesn’t need to be too thick, and one even coat is all you need in most cases.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy your new deck!
